Job Description
Shuttle mechanical optimization
Problem: Currently most shuttles are designed with components sized to gut feeling. In order to optimize the components and make sure they are not over or under designed an FEA analysis of the component should be done to estimate fatigue life. In order to do an FEA analysis accurate load information is critical.
Main issues: FEA analysis of shuttle components is not done today so we don't know how close we are to part mechanical limits. There could be significant cost saving opportunities, weight saving opportunities, and energy consumption reduction opportunities.
Solution idea: Develop a methodology for doing FEA internally, use the load cycles to do FEA on shuttle components, and determine opportunities for improvements
Short description: Determine best mesh size vs feature size (convergence analysis), make sure we have needed material properties, determine types of elements to use, determine analysis methodology, perform FEA on major shuttle components and provide opportunities, and if time permits go into detailed analysis of sub-components.
